Overthrow the Leader

Overcoming the addiction of power

Colossians 1:13, Ephesians 2:2-4

I.                     Understanding the source of the problem

a.      Man was living in full fellowship and in obedience to God, full blessings

b.      There was no conflict, no addiction, no other authority or power

c.      Satan tempted Adam and Eve by telling them that they could choose, that they could be as wise as God himself Genesis 3:5

d.      There was only one choice—the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil—

e.      Man chose to make his own decisions and determine for himself what was right and wrong Isaiah 53:6, Romans 3:12

f.        By choosing not to love and obey God they chose their own path and were expelled from the Garden of Eden

g.      There are only two kingdoms Ephesians 2:2-4, Colossians 1:13

                                                              i.      In one kingdom God rules

ii.      In the other kingdom you rule as a puppet ruler deceived by Satan

h.      Man thought that making his own decisions and doing his own thing made free but in reality he became a slave John 8:34, II Peter 2:19

II.                   The leader that must be overthrown is self

a.      Picture of the natural man I Corinthians 2:14

                                                              i.      Receives not the things of God

ii.      They are foolishness to him

iii.      He can’t know them because you have to have the Spirit to understand

                                                           iv.      This isn’t man’s wisdom I Corinthians 2:13

b.      Picture of the Carnal man I Corinthians 3:1-4

                                                              i.      Talk to them like babies

ii.      Feed them milk like babies

iii.      Can’t sit at the adult table—can’t bear it

                                                           iv.      Jealous, fighting, divisions, sectarians

                                                             v.      They live and act like a natural man

c.      Picture of the Spiritual man I Corinthians 2:15-16

                                                              i.      Know how to make proper decisions

ii.      He has the mind of Christ

III.                  Steps to overthrow the leader

a.      You must be born again otherwise Jesus is outside your life and only self rules

b.      Once you are born again you must know some basic Bible truths about the new life in Christ

                                                              i.      In Christ we have newness of life Romans 6:4

ii.      Sinful old man destroyed so that you do not have to serve sin nor should we Romans 6:6

iii.      God loves you in spite of your actions Romans 5:20

iv.      We are saved by grace Ephesians 2:8-9

c.      Once you know the truth you must act on what you know or reckon it to be so Romans 6:11

                                                              i.      Decide to live out the truth

ii.      You are free to choose to the addiction or not

iii.      You can reckon yourself the slave or the freed

iv.      You can reckon yourself to be the conquered or the conqueror

                                                             v.      You can reckon yourself the addict or the man of God

d.      Call it what it is sin—Romans 7:13

e.      As a Christian you grieve or hurt the Lord when you sin Ephesians 4:30

f.        Think on the consequences of your sin Hebrews 12:15, James 1:13-15

                                                              i.      It makes you a slave Romans 6:16

ii.      It embarrasses you Romans 6:21

g.      Change the way you think Romans 12:2, James 1:21

                                                              i.      You used to think that you couldn’t have victory

ii.      You now know that you are free from sin and a servant of righteousness if you just decide Romans 6:22

h.      Yield to God Romans 6:13

                                                              i.      You choose what you will do with your life every day

ii.      You decide who you will give yourself to

iii.      You can’t blame it on anyone

i.        Choose to make opportunities to serve God and not the addiction Romans 6:20

j.         Never forget where you came from but know that God has given you the power to overcome

Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Rom 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Col 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

Joh 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

2Pe 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

1Co 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1Co 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

1Co 3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

1Co 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

1Co 3:4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

1Co 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

1Co 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
